Day 56 Resting in St. Catharines

Today is a day of rest. I slept in and had a leisurely morning. This was a blessing as every other day I wake up and have to get ready and get on the road.

Marc Van Otteren wanted to go to the Welland Canal which was only a couple of miles away, so I decided to go with him. He knows almost all the ships on the great lakes so we were hoping that a ship might be going through the locks. But there weren’t any more for the rest of the day, so we looked at the lock and the museum. The lock we went to is the third out of seven locks. So we went down to the first two locks on the way to Lake Ontario. When we got past the first we saw a ship coming up to the first lock. We were going to watch it go through the lock, but we had to make it back to the school for lunch.

After lunch we were bused to the park where the celebration was held. It was raining hard when we got there so we all sought shelter. I got tired of sitting around so Mark Stehouwer and I borrowed Karen’s umbrella and hiked around. We found a huge statue that was under repair, with beautiful flowers around the base. We found a trail that we followed for a while and actually found part of where we were going to be biking tomorrow.

Right before the service it stopped raining and the sun peaked through the clouds for a little while. We then had dinner afterwards of hamburgers and hot dogs. The food was good, but the line took forever to move. It took over two hours to serve dinner!
