Day 6 Sunnyside to Kennewick

Distance Biked Today: 52.3 miles

Time Spent Biking: 3:21

Avg Speed: 15.5 mph

Max speed: 34.2 mph

Total Distance Biked: 331 miles

First, I have an addendum. Yesterday a church in Zillah opened their doors to us by providing drinks, and snacks for us along the route. Thanks!

Today was another day of biking, of course, which led us down hill ever so slightly leading into Kennewick (referred to as the tri-cities area). I tried riding with a couple different people but they were either going too fast or too slow for the pace that I wanted. So I ended up riding by myself for a bit which was relaxing to either go fast or slow whenever I wanted to.

On the way into Kennewick we took a couple wrong turns, but a local biker helped lead us to the park. We were supposed to take the road but we ended up taking a bike path that led us on a longer but more scenic route. The last several miles we rode was Columbia Park which sits aside the huge river. As we arrived at camp, we were greeted by cookies, lemonade and a smile from a local from an area church. At the same time, a local news crew taped several of the cyclists for the six o'clock news. Our camp for the next two nights would be at the park right alongside the river.

If you're not convinced yet that this tour is a big deal, you soon will be. We are meeting lots of people and telling them about the tour along the route each day, but moreover the purpose behind the tour. We have little cards we can pass out to the motorists we meet or people in stores or anywhere.

I had a several hour nap to catch up on the short 6-7 hour nights that I've had. This was heavenly and long awaited.

After the nap, I hurried to catch David, a local, who was shuttling people around to stores and the laundromat but I missed. So I waited for a bit and got on the next ride. At the laundromat I did a small load of wash, and brought everything back to dry on a broken limb behind my tent. I needed to get back for the hamburgers that were on the menu for the night. I was excited and rightful so. They were awesome.

I then went swimming in the frigid river to clean and cool off. Later, I talked and later went down to the river to read, reflect, and relax. What a beautiful end to a wonderful day and a challenging week.
